If you’ve ever stared at your Pinterest analytics and wondered what exactly you should be measuring, sit back and take a breath, because I’ve got you covered. As a Pinterest manager, these are the analytics I focus on when measuring for growth. Let’s dive in to exactly what they are and then I will teach you how to strategically analyze them.
Keep in mind these values are only available if you have a Pinterest Business account, not a personal account you’re using for business. I have a whole post on why it’s important to upgrade to a free business account here.
Saves- If you have a ton of saves, you’ve appealed to the Pinterest Algorithm gods. That’s the stat Pinterest says it likes the most. This means people have seen your pins, enjoyed them, and saved them to come back to later. This sends signals to Pinterest to show that piece of content to more people, which helps in your distribution and growth.
Impressions– This show the number of times your pins were on someone’s screen. But take this vanity metric lightly- they could have just scrolled on by. OR they could have clicked over to your website. You’ll need to look at your other data to cross reference this. What Impressions DO tell you is if your SEO (keywords) are working well. We will go over this in the next post.
Pin Clicks– This means someone saw your pin, and clicked on it for a closer look. They likely took a longer look at the pin image itself. Maybe they read the description. We really don’t know what they did after that. Did they save it? Did they go to your website? Did they click out of it? Whatever happened, the fact that they took a longer look is a positive signal to Pinterest.
Outbound Clicks– The holy grail of Pinterest metrics from a business’s perspective. This shows the number of people who left Pinterest to go to your website. These lead your newest email sign ups, buyers, and new clients.
You can also see Outbound clicks numbers in Google Analytics as traffic, but keep in mind that because of new privacy laws, sometimes outbound clicks might now show up in GA as being from Pinterest, sometimes they get marked as “direct”. And sometimes Pinterest will show fewer outbound clicks than GA if a pinner leaves your website within a matter of seconds (like if they accidentally clicked off Pinterest). Just be prepared for GA and Pinterest to not always have their numbers matching exactly.
There are other metrics I peek at like engagements, and some triggers like “add to cart” if you are selling products, but the ones above are the main ones I track no matter what type of business you are, and they are the ones I’d suggest you start with.
Now that you understand what they are measuring, be sure to head to THIS POST to get a deeper understanding of how to actually compare these metrics so you can see what’s working, and even troubleshoot problems with your strategy.
Happy Pinning,
Sarah
