How to Understand Your Pinterest Analytics
(and troubleshoot problems with your strategy)
Ok, so you can “read” your Pinterest analytics, but can you apply the data?
(If you don’t know what the individual metrics do, go back and read this post first)
What we are doing here is comparing two metrics against each other to get a better understanding of how your account performs and what you should keep doing or do better. Here’s the 3 most common metrics I compare and what they mean.
Impressions vs Saves:
If you have high impressions, but low saves this means your keywords are working but nobody is keeping your pins for later. Maybe they aren’t even interacting with them at all. This could be a couple of things:
- Your SEO needs fixing. Maybe you’re missing keywords in places or you’re targeting the wrong keywords.
- Your pin design, well, sucks. And don’t get me wrong, it might not be how you actually designed it, it might be the wrong format for what your audience wants (you post a static pin, when they need a video).
Outbound Clicks to Saves
(Or impressions)- I like to look at how many people move to your website compared to how many people save or even see your pin. This tells me how desirable your content is, and if your pins are interesting enough for people to want to explore more.
If you have high saves but low outbound clicks, you could be giving too much info on the pin already, or your call to action is weak.
If you have high outbound clicks, but low saves, people are likely seeing your pins in the feed and immediately leaving Pinterest to explore more. Good for you! I’d suggest making sure you encourage them to also save your pins since Pinterest loves this the most (SEE THIS POST WHERE I EXPLAIN THIS MORE).
Pin Clicks vs Outbound clicks.
High pin clicks and low outbound clicks mean people are taking a closer look but not moving to your website. You’re either missing something people are wanting, or you’re giving them everything they need on the pin with no CTA.
Obviously there are other things you can compare but these will give you the most bang for your buck. You’ll be able to see what IS working and determine what you can do to improve if you learn how to compare these metrics.
