Pinterest Manager VS Social Media Manager

Oh boy, I’m pretty sure I’m going to rub some people the wrong way with this, but hear me out. I see “JobOpps” all the time asking for help with their Pinterest account and the responses are filled with social media managers saying “I can do Pinterest for you”. And they probably can! SMM’s are great at posting content, engagement, and growth and are fluent in many social media platforms. But you would be surprised how many social media managers come to me for Pinterest help for their clients.

It’s because Pinterest isn’t really a social media platform. It’s a visual search engine. Think about it, when was the last time you hopped on Pinterest to see what your cousin was up to? You probably haven’t… ever. That’s because Pinterest is actually the 3rd largest search engine behind Google and Youtube. In fact if you Google “tattoo ideas” or “popular paint colors”, you’re probably going to find most of your results lead back to Pinterest.

Since it’s a search engine, Pinterest also comes with its own algorithm, engagement expectations, and best practices that are unlike the popular social media platforms. That’s where a Pinterest Manager comes in. Their sole focus revolves around strategy, SEO, and staying up to date on the algorithm changes- not just creating a graphic and posting it on a Pinterest board. There’s keyword research, reading the source codes, researching the most up to date practices, and more. So much is trial and error, and a good Pinterest Strategist will have detailed records of what they’ve tested. And trust me, that’s a lot of work!

Think of it this way. Let’s say you drive a BMW that is making a clanking noise. You can either take it to a general mechanic who works on all cars, or you can take it to a BMW mechanic who knows your model inside and out. Which would you choose? See where I’m going with this?

So if you want to hire someone to take over your Pinterest account, ask them how they stay up to date on the algorithm changes, what their strategy is for your unique business, and if they can ensure you’re ready for Pinterest marketing. That way you can make an informed decision on who you are hiring and feel confident that you will get the results you’re looking for.
